Elections: Private Ballots, Public Accountability

Aug 13, 2026

An opening proposal for public discussion

Elections require two forms of trust: citizens must be confident that lawful votes are counted accurately, and voters must be protected from intimidation or retaliation. That is why citizens should vote privately while public officials should act publicly.

The starting proposal would preserve the secret ballot, use voter-verifiable paper records, conduct routine audits before certification, and publish chain-of-custody procedures, testing records, audit results, and recount rules. Voter identification can be reasonable only when every eligible citizen can obtain acceptable identification free of charge and without unreasonable difficulty.

Early voting, accessible Election Day voting, and reasonable absentee options should remain available with identity verification, ballot tracking, and a process for correcting technical errors. The goal should be both access and security, not forcing citizens to choose one over the other.

Accountability must extend beyond the ballot box. Elected officials’ votes, attendance, sponsored legislation, major meetings, and campaign donors should be searchable. Redistricting should use independent or politically balanced commissions with published maps, criteria, data, and public hearings. Significant campaign contributions and political spending should be disclosed quickly, including the original funding behind organizations purchasing advertisements.

Every candidate should have a standardized public profile listing positions, experience, funding, endorsements, corrections, and responses to constituent questions. Democracy becomes stronger when citizens vote privately, elections are auditable, and those who seek power operate in full public view.

Questions for the Conversation

Which election procedures would increase both access and confidence?

What campaign-finance information should be disclosed immediately?

How should redistricting decisions be made and reviewed?
