Abortion: Can We Respect Both Liberty and Life?

Aug 13, 2026

An opening proposal for public discussion

Few subjects divide people more deeply than abortion. One side begins with the woman: pregnancy affects her body, health, family, future, finances, and personal freedom. The other side begins with the developing child and the belief that human life deserves protection before birth. Both concerns are morally serious, and dismissing either one prevents an honest conversation.

A workable policy should recognize that pregnancy develops over time and that the competing interests become more difficult as it progresses. My starting proposal would protect abortion access during the earlier stages of pregnancy, allow greater restrictions later as the fetus becomes capable of surviving outside the womb, and preserve exceptions for serious threats to the mother’s life or health and other extraordinary circumstances.

Medical decisions should be made by patients and qualified healthcare professionals within clear laws—not by politicians attempting to practice medicine. Women should receive accurate information about the pregnancy, fetal development, the procedure, alternatives, and available assistance without intimidation or deliberate misinformation from either side.

Society should also do far more to prevent unintended pregnancies and support women who want to continue difficult pregnancies. That includes responsible education, access to contraception, prenatal and maternal care, protection from abuse, childcare, adoption services, housing assistance, and meaningful financial responsibility from fathers.

A society cannot claim to value unborn life while abandoning mothers and children after birth. It also should not discuss abortion as though no developing life is involved. The goal should be fewer unintended pregnancies, fewer abortions, healthier mothers and children, and laws that acknowledge both liberty and life.

Questions for the Conversation

When should legal protection for developing life begin, and should it increase as pregnancy progresses?

What exceptions should apply later in pregnancy?

What support should society provide to women who continue unexpected or medically difficult pregnancies?

What responsibilities should fathers have before and after birth?

Can this issue be discussed without treating everyone on the other side as morally corrupt?
