Jimmy Tran was elected to serve as the Garland City Council Member for District 1 in May 2026. A Garland resident of over 24 years, Jimmy is deeply committed to strengthening the community through responsive leadership, public safety and sustainable economic growth.

Jimmy brings over 25 years of professional experience as a Senior Software Engineer at J.C. Penney, where he has led complex systems and technology initiatives. His background in problem-solving, data-driven decision making, and team leadership provides a strong foundation for addressing the evolving needs of Garland. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Business.

Jimmy was born into a military family, and his father served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He came to the United States as a refugee in 1994 and is deeply grateful for the freedom and opportunities this country has provided. His journey from refugee to technology professional, community leader, and now City Council Member reflects his commitment to service and to giving back to the community he calls home.

A dedicated community leader, Jimmy is the founder and past president of Vietnam United FC, a nonprofit organization that brings residents together through youth development, sports and cultural engagement. He also serves on the Board of the Garland ISD Education Foundation and is a member of the Garland Police Training Advisory Committee. His community involvement includes the Garland Police Citizen Academy Alumni Association, the Garland Multicultural Commission and active engagement with the Garland Community Leader Group.

Jimmy is a graduate of Leadership Garland Class 45 and has completed the Garland Citizen Police Academy. He regularly engages with neighborhood groups, local businesses, and residents across Garland to stay connected to community priorities.

As a Council Member, Jimmy focuses on economic development and redevelopment, supporting small businesses, enhancing public safety, and investing in infrastructure. He also prioritizes transparent, accessible communication with residents. He is committed to listening first and working collaboratively to deliver practical solutions that improve quality of life across District 1 and the entire Garland community.

Personal Life

Jimmy and his wife, Trang Nguyen, have been married for many years and are proud parents of three children who have grown up in Garland and attended Garland ISD schools. Their family has called Garland home for over two decades, and they are grateful to be part of a diverse and vibrant community.
