John Fishpaw is a proud product of Garland ISD, where he graduated from Garland High School. His passion for learning led him to focus on education during his undergraduate studies. After earning his degree from the University of North Texas, he returned to Garland ISD as a math teacher at Austin Academy, working diligently to create a safe learning environment where students could discover the joy in learning.
With 27 years of experience in public education, Mr. Fishpaw is now entering his third year as principal at North Garland High School. His career includes serving as Principal of Austin Academy for Excellence and as Assistant Principal at Garland High School. Before transitioning to administration, he held roles as the College, Career, and Readiness Facilitator for GISD and a Math Facilitator.
John’s educational philosophy is deeply rooted in his core values of joy, respect, and integrity. He believes that fostering joy in learning creates an engaging and positive atmosphere that motivates students to reach their full potential. Respect is central to his approach, as he strives to build a community where every student and staff member feels valued and heard. Integrity guides his leadership, ensuring that his actions and decisions are always in the best interest of the students and the school community.
Outside of his professional life, John treasures spending time with his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Hannah (19) and Jack (11). His commitment to family and education reflects his dedication to fostering a positive and nurturing environment both at home and in the school community. John Fishpaw’s love for learning, combined with his values-driven leadership, continues to inspire and shape the lives of students and staff alike.
