Dr. Brian Beck was elected to the District 2 position in May 2021 and is serving his second term. He also served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2022-2024. Prior to election he served the Denton community on the Denton Planning and Zoning Commission, the Denton Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Woodrow Wilson Elementary Community Advisory Board, and as Woodrow Wilson Elementary Science Fair Coordinator.
Brian earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry & Biophysics in 1991 from Texas A&M University – College Station, a PhD in Biochemistry & Biophysics in 1997 from Washington State University – Pullman, and completed post-doctoral work in the Chemistry Department and Institute for Molecular Design from 1998 to 2004 at the University of Houston.
Brian grew up in the Clear Lake region of Southeast Houston and has a 33+ year career as a scientist and educator in computational/structural biology, high-performance computing, and cloud-computing. Brian came to Denton in 2007 as faculty in the Texas Woman’s University Biology department. Following that, in 2015 he worked at the University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) where he was TACC’s Dallas/Fort Worth regional liaison as well as providing support for National Science Foundation’s Jetstream Cloud Computing platform. In January of 2024, he retired from UT-Austin.
